For about three years the advice here was boring and correct: if you’re building fresh, skip AM4 and start on AM5. The Ryzen 5 7600 is faster, it ships with a cooler, and the socket is still getting new chips. Easy.

  • Lowest cost right now, GPU is king. Buy the 5600. Reuse or buy cheap DDR4, grab a B550 board, and dump the savings into the graphics card. You’ll game great at 1080p and spend the least.
  • You want this build to last and upgrade. Buy the 7600. You’re paying the DDR5 tax today, but you’re buying onto a socket that takes a 9800X3D-class chip later without a teardown. Over five years that’s the cheaper road.

My honest lean in mid-2026? If the platform gap is around $150 and you’ll keep the machine for years, the 7600 is still worth it. The DDR5 spike stings, but a dead-end socket stings longer.
